One of our greatest fears has reared its ugly head and is staring directly into our eyes. We’ve known that anti-abortion activists are laser-focused on their priority of overturning abortion rights. With the leak of Justice Samuel Alito’s unpublished majority opinion that Roe v Wade should be overturned, women’s right to privacy, along with our right to choose, and the right to control our bodies is on the verge of being extracted from our democratic society.
New York State Federation of Democratic Women President Diane Lechner issued the following statement that speaks for all women:
“A bombshell was dropped on the women of New York yesterday as they learned the Supreme Court of the United States of America is poised to overturn more than 40 years of settled law and drive desperate, pregnant women into the nation’s back alleys once again.
We are outraged, but not surprised. The extreme right-wing majority has been waging incremental attacks on abortion access for decades, effectively creating a patchwork of legislative restrictions that have served, to inhibit women’s healthcare across wide swaths of the nation. At the same time, the Republican Party has been hard at work loading the Court with political partisans willing to abandon the authority of established legal precedent. We cannot and will not go back to a time when women were forced to give birth against their will. It is time for Congress to follow New York’s lead and codify into federal law abortion rights.”

We must be even more dedicated to electing pro-choice candidates to the U.S. Senate, the U.S. House of Representatives, and state legislature. The time is now!
